The past
few weeks, the children have shown an interest in cooking. This morning, the
children had the opportunity to make pumpkin play dough from scratch with Ms.
Szymaszek. First...
the
children measured out the ingredients. Next, they took turns stirring up the
sweet-smelling mixture. The children noted that it smelled like candy. Then Ms.
Szymaszek scooped the mixture out of the bowl and into the hot pan to make it
less sticky. Once the play dough had thickened up, the children brought it to
the classroom and began working it with their hands and with rolling pins.

| The children used measuring cups to scoop up the flour. "It looks like sugar!" |

| We talked about what type of scoop we would need. "We need one big full scoop? Is this full enough? It's over the side." |

| The children took turns mixing the dry ingredients: flour, salt, cream of tartar, and pumpkin pie spice. |

| We mixed oil and water together. The children noticed that "its making bubbles in there. Did we mix it up enough?" We also added maple extract to the mix. |
When the children returned to the classroom, they used rolling pins to "roll out the dough. Just like making cookies!"
