January Newsletter
Welcome back!
Greetings Families!
January has arrived, and so has the cold winter weather! As a reminder, thank you again for helping your child wash his/her hands at drop-off, and promoting good health habits. If your child is unable to come to school due to a cold or allergies, please call the front desk at 313-593-5424 to help us know who to expect each day.
With the bitter cold winter weather arriving, it is important to know that if the temperature feels more than 20 degrees, we will be going outside for a short period of time. Fresh air and exercise outdoor are an important part of our day, so be sure to send all the appropriate clothing to school with your child. Most winter clothes look similar, especially snow pants, hats and gloves, so thank you in advance for labeling any of you child’s jackets, hats, gloves, etc. One helpful way to store winter clothing is to put your child’s gloves/mittens inside a hat, then place the hat inside the child’s coat sleeve. This way, the clothing is kept safe and serves as a reminder to your child to put on his/her own hat and gloves.
With a new semester comes a set of new adult faces in the classroom. This winter we will have a few new staff members, several new practicum students, and four new interns. Feel free to introduce yourself to any new adults in the classroom, and join me in welcoming our interns this semester: Ms. Chami on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Ms. Eady on Thursdays, Ms. Worley on Fridays and Ms. Sanchez on Fridays.
As always, if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please feel free to email me at aszymasz@umd.umich.edu. Happy New Year!

Project Progress: Onward into the New Semester
The new semester is likely to bring new explorations, though we will continue to explore with cooking, illustrating and music in the new year. 1). The children’s interest in cooking continued throughout December, as the children talked about making “cookies” with the scented playdough. We made a new batch (somewhat unsuccessfully), and rolled out the dough for use with cookie cutters. 2).Throughout the second half of the semester, the children’s interest in drawing also increased. We will continue to explore with different drawing tools and hopefully begin to publish our own stories in the coming year. 3). The children showed an interest in musical instruments during the end of the school year and in listening to music as well. We will continue our exploration with hand bells, maracas and drums, and introduce some new instruments as well, including the ukulele, acoustic guitar, and trumpet.
Despite some glitches with pictures (the site said I posted too many!), I think I have figured out how to continue to post on the blog. For more information on project progress, check the blog at http://ecec-szymaszek.blogspot.com on a regular basis, and look for the newsletter and announcements on the side pages as well.
