During the week of September 10, the children’s interest in rockets and outer space continued.  The children used different building materials, like the playplax above, to build a rocket ship.  “This is where the flames come out!  This is where the fire explodes.”  The children took the rocket to the stage, and continued to be “in outer space.”  The “arrow” on the record player “says how fast we’re going.  We’re going kind of slow.”  The window was the window of the “rocket ship.” Next, the group of children discovered a tray of rocks.  They said they “found lots of space rocks” and that they “need to put them over here to hide them for later.”

On September 6, the children began to build with the flat citiblocks.  After a few minutes in the science area, the children found a basket of stuffed birds.  “Look, Serena!  I found all the birds!  They were hiding.”  The children then used the citiblocks to create houses for the birds to live in.  “Where did the baby bird go?  I have the mommy bird and she wants to find the baby bird.”

The children’s exploration began with observing the letters in the Science area made out of natural materials. They noticed that the letters were made out of shells and other familiar items. The children then pulled out natural materials and began to make their own letters and shapes. Two children wrote their initials on a piece of paper and then began placing the shells on the lines of their letters to create their own nature letters.  Later, one of the children drew a heart on the paper and covered the drawing with red caps.
