Ms. Szymaszek’s Investigations:
“We are building a zoo.”
October 12, 2012
This
morning, the children took it upon themselves to construct a zoo for the
animals in the block area. The children decided to work collaboratively, rather
than working independently on this project. They worked together to create an
elaborate structure with rooms separating the animal types. They placed all of
the hippos in one area of their zoo and all of the tigers in a den-like room in
their zoo. “Look, these two are the same,” a child noted as he held up two
tigers. “…and these are all hippos. A mom, a dad, and two sisters,” another
child commented as he pointed to the hippos. Not only were the children separating
the animals by species but they were also distinguishing parts of the animal
families.
