During the week of May 21^st, the children in the afternoon worked on creating a map of the garden.  First, the children planted several flats of new flowers, plants, and vegetables.  Next, the children worked to create a map by reflecting on the plants they had planted.  The children used small clipboards and small pieces of paper to draw tiles of the plants.  Next, the children placed them on the poster-board map of the garden as drawn by the teacher.  The children then wrote the names of the plants for reference.

On Thursday, May 25, 2012, the children created their own Picasso inspired images.  First, the children looked at the prints of the Picasso paintings for inspiration, and talked about what they saw.  “It looks like a lady.”  “That one is a bunch of squigglies.” Using black markers on white paper, the children drew their own abstract pictures of people.  The following day, some of the children added water color to their artwork.

Does a hermit crab have feet?

To continue our exploration of animals, Ms. M brought in her hermit crabs.  We talked about how we had to carefully pick them up with our hands and set them down gently.  As the children were talking about the crabs, the teacher posed the question do crab have feet?  To expand the investigation and observation, we put the crab on the sand in the sand tray for the light table. The children noticed the tracks the crabs left as they moved around in the sand.
