How about we build a big wall with blocks with a big
hole in it so we can see the birds?

On Monday, June 10, the children were
invited to sit under the awning and listen to the rain. We talked about what we saw and what we
heard.
The children noticed a golden
finch flying around the playground. The
conversation quickly turned to making connections to building and birds. When asked what could we do to encourage the birds to come closer?, the
children responded with “we could hide so they don’t see us in a box.”
The children decided to build a bird watching
house out of blocks “to hide in it so we can see the birds.” “But how will we make the top of the house?”
“We could build a wall, and take out one
block so we could see.” “Like a window!”
After pointing to the roof, one of the children
said, “This [awning] could be our umbrella for the roof of the house.” “I have an umbrella in my cubby!” The children determined umbrellas should be
used as a roof “to keep the rain out and keep us dry.”
One of the children suggested using “a square
for the floor and then build the walls around it.” Using chalk to draw the square floor, the
children used the chalk as a guide for where to build the four walls.
After the walls were built, six umbrellas were used to create the roof.
The
children then decided that umbrellas were too challenging for a roof, so they
proceeded to draw plans inside for what the roof should be made out of.
